i have not seen a post for this yet so thought i would start one. i think there could be great value in this market.

you have the obvious favourites in villa and torres, fabiano, drogba etc

i think messi at around 20/1 is a great shout. argentina will progress out of there group with no problems and will be confident of reaching the semi finals. he finished champs league top scorer last season with a good margin and the world cup is the stage for the worlds best players. as an each way shout, defoe at 33/1 may interest people, as well as 40/1 for Benzema.

Opinions?

I wouldn't really fancy backing anyone beyond The first three you mentioned. I suppose Defoe could be worth a little, although is it looking like he will start most games? If Ivory Coast score, it is highly likely it will be Drogba scoring it, but they probably won't go far enough to make it worth while. No one from France or ITALIA would tempt me at all.

I agree with you about Messi this guy is class and always seems to pop up with a goal. I think Argentina can go a long way in the World Cup despite their poor qualifying results.

went with aguero in the end. a player that topped argentina's top scoring in qualification, scores in spain and champs league regularly and is priced at 25/1.

very good each way shout for me

Tevez is 50/1?????

errrrrrr, yeah...... only thing I can see to justify it is only 8 goals in 51 appearances for Argentina, but in a one off cup competition, you'd be crazy not to have a look at Tevez, especially at those odds.

I would probably plump for David Villa. He is the best striker in the world right now I think. Usually outscores Torres for Spain. Besides him I'd back Luis Fabiano.

I'd be all over Klose at those odds. I still dont think he is that good as a player (not in the Torres Villa, Messi mould etc), but every international tournament he shows up he scores a few.

Got 5 in 2002 finishing 2nd and 5 again in 2006 finishing 1st.

as AJ says, Tevez is pure value at 50's as well.

Drogba. I fancy a strong performance from at least one African side given the location of the tournament, I think Ivory Coast are the most likely and if they go far, he'll score plenty.

Just a question. Is the winner invariably from a side who goes very late in the tournament or does it sometimes come out of a side that went out in say the last 8 or even 16?

I'd wait until the kick off before striking that bet mate he is far to injury prone, I layed him for the Premiership top scorer earlier in the season purely on the basis that he was likely to pick up an injury which has turned out to be the case.

A speculative one I fancy at massive odds is Cabanas (Paraguay) 200/1. Great goal scoring record in the qualifiers, and in a group containing Slovakia and New Zealand may have every chance of banging in a few.

I really don't fancy any African team. It's usually the weather/conditions that favours the hosts imo, but it will be Winter when it's played. I think that negates any small advantage they had.

Since I expect Argentina to do well and maybe even win the World Cup so my picks will be:

Messi @ 21.00
Aguero @ 21.00
Higuain @ 26.00
Tevez @ 51.00

Agreed, in fact I think even if you could chose an "all africa" team from all the african teams that'd made it there it wouldn't even go close let alone win it.

Maybe you should research it Ashtee, lazy bugger!

I do remember Salenko being joint top scorer with 6 in 1994, but he got 5 of those in one group match alone. Russia didn't even get out of their group!
