European & WW Comp (I)
Back in December 2005 blueprints for the first ever competition were made. After a lot of opinions were gathered, a format was decided. 18 people put their name down on a list and 6 others were invited to join, giving a total of 24 participants. These 24 were split into 6 groups of 4.
The format for this 1st competition was that everyone would play each other only once (a total of 3 group games) Whoever won each group would progress to the Quarter finals, in addition to the highest scoring 2 runners up. Positions in each group were decided by H2H record. If that H2H was the same, or more than 2 people tied, then goal difference would determine position.
The knockout stages were only 1 leg (QFs, SFs, final)
Looking back, there were a lot of big names in this 1st ever competition. I would be delighted to see people such as Djordje, Tulenos, Rumlesen, even Paul Ross return to participate in future seasons. Also people like Galea, Arkadios and my old friend Psilocybin who now seem to have gone 'missing' for a long time.
There were plenty of memorable matches. In the very first week of the competition, Galea and Psilocybin met in a mighty clash that ended 8-4, it turned out to be the highest scoring game in this first season.
Eventually it was Psilocybin who went on to beat Archaeus in the final 6-3. Overall the competition was a success. One of the main aims of it was to test out the format and see if it could be a success - and it was. It paved the way for future competitions, and also lessons were learned from any mistakes made. The competition was sponsored by
centrebet, but all future events were to be sponsored by
betfair.
One final note about this competition is in the remembrance of 'Spreadman'. The great PL legend took part in the event, but sadly he died just a few months after his conclusion.
