An on-line petition, launched by Reds fan Ian Little, has been logged with Downing Street and is attracting massive interest.
Almost 13,000 names have already been added and it currently stands in 10th place of the 3,850 e-petitions on the Prime Minister's own website site.
A Whitehall source said: "It has really taken off and it would be difficult to ignore if it really goes stratospheric."
