Doncaster Betting: Certify to make it three out of three for Godolphin in May Hill

2.55 Doncaster: Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies) (1m)

The second Group race for 2yo’s at Doncaster on Friday is the May Hill Stakes for fillies over the straight mile course.  Recently its been a race that the Godolphin camp have targeted and won the race in 2010 and 2011 and this year they have a very strong contender in Certify who will be a warm favourite to pull off the hat-trick of victories and is a best priced 11/8 shot with bookmakers Paddy Power.

Obviously the distance of the race is always an unknown for many as the 2yo’s have been contesting races over shorter trips until now and Certify falls into that category having won her two starts to date both at Newmarket over 6f and 7f. Last time out she beat Sky Lantern who has since gone on to frank the form in some fashion by winning a Group 1 race at the Curragh and her style of running suggests the mile will hold no fears, she also won her maiden on soft ground so even if the ground stays dead she should be able to cope ok so all looks set for bold bid.

The danger on the book is Mick Channon’s Ollie Olga who also beat Sky Lantern in the 7f Prestige Stakes at Goodwood; she had earlier won two races over 6f and has done nothing wrong to date, her victory over Sky Lantern was a little more hard fought so maybe just has to find some more to beat the favourite here. David Simcock runs Go Angellica who has won over this trip when beating Cailifante easily at Salisbury a couple of weeks ago, prior to that she was fourth in a Listed event at Sandown where she finished in behind two of todays rivals in Purr Along and Roz and is clearly improving the further she goes and could reverse those placing’s. William Buick takes the ride and is one for the shortlist and has every chance of making the frame.

Purr Along has since been out to France and won a Group 3 contest at Deauville over 7f so is no mug herself while Roz maybe wants better ground than she will get here to show her best. Charlie Hills has been quiet lately but usually does well at Doncaster so his Reyaadah must be respected, she won her maiden at HQ and then was third to Certify last time having met trouble in running and staying on well suggesting this trip will suit her well. She could run well here but I’m not sure she will be good enough to trouble the favourite once again. The other one with a squeak is Tuttipaesi, she has won three times already in Italy and is fitted with a hood for the first time here, she could be anything really and makes her British debut for Marco Botti.

A strong renewal of the May Hill Stakes and everything looks set for Godolphin to make it three wins in as many years with the hot favourite Certify, her price wont be very generous but is hard to oppose on her overall form. An each way alternative maybe Reyaadah for the Hill’s yard, she was denied a clear run when she met Certify last time and while she wouldn’t of won anyway she would have finished closer and at 12/1 looks reasonably priced.

Selections;

3pts Certify 11/8 Stan James

1pt EW Reyaadah 12/1 Ladbrokes
