Day vs Selt Betting: Ryan Day can continue his rise in form by seeing off Matthew Selt in Australia

Ryan Day hasn’t had a lot to shout about in the last 12-18 months or so but he showed at the World Championship that he was beginning to come back into form and confirmed that with his first round win in the Australian Goldfields Open. Now that he’s into the second round he’ll be looking to progress even further. He faces Matthew Selt, who knocked out the defending champion in the first round, in the second round on Thursday.

Ryan Day comes into the match as the 4/7 favourite with Stan James. He reached the quarter finals of the World Championship earlier in the year before a resurgent Matthew Stevens was way too good for him but already this week the Welshman has beaten Andrew Higginson having previously beaten Michael White to make it into this tournament. Day hasn’t had a lot of wins recently so each one he gets will be giving him more and more confidence.

Matthew Selt should be high on confidence after knocking out the defending champion Stuart Bingham in the opening round on Tuesday. It must be said though that it wasn’t a high quality match and Selt will have to improve if he is to win this match. To be fair to him he may well come on for the run as he still isn’t fully used to the TV cameras and bright lights of a major tournament.

Even allowing for the fact that Matthew Selt might come on a bit I think Day will have too much for him. Ryan Day is a very good player when he has a bit of confidence behind him and he doesn’t let chances to boost his ranking go by without taking a lot of them. He knows the chance he has this week and if he repeats his performance against Higginson from the first round I think he’ll be hard to beat here.
