Chavez Jr vs Rubio Betting: Chavez Jr could come up short if this turns into a tear up

The second part of the world title action on Box Nation on Saturday night comes from the Alamodome in Texas. There are two world title fights on the bill. The first sees Nonito Donaire taking on Wilfredo Vazquez Jr for the vacant WBO super-bantamweight title and that is followed by Julio Cesar Chavez defending his WBC middleweight title against Marco Antonio Rubio in the main event of the night.

It’s the main event I will concentrate on here. Julio Cesar Chavez, trained by Amir Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach puts his unbeaten record on the line in the second defence of his title. This is the 47th fight of Chavez’s established career even though he is only 25 years old. Chavez has won 44 of the previous 46 contests with one draw and one no contest. 31 of his 44 wins have come by stoppage including against Peter Manfredo last time out.

Marco Antonio Rubio is something of a human wrecking machine. He has won 53 of his 59 fights with 46 of those wins coming by way of a stoppage. He has lost 5 times though with his all on the line style and three of those defeats come via knockout, the latest of which came against Kelly Pavlik. 9 of Rubio’s last 10 wins have come by stoppage making him a dangerous opponent for the champion.

This is a really dangerous fight for Chavez Jr particularly if he gets into a tear up because Rubio packs a lot of power. If Chavez just boxes and moves then I expect him to get the job done but there is no certainty he will do that. The general consensus is that Chavez has been protected so far in his career but there’s no protection for him here and at 5/1 I think the challenger could land a knockout blow here.
