ATP Newport Betting: Olivier Rochus can go quite far once again
The ATP tournament in Newport is always quite tricky for punters, as the favourites always tend to struggle for various reasons. This year, the line-up is even more impressive than ever before, but I wonder whether that will do anything with that interesting trend. Milos Raonic, who is getting a lot of attention these days, is coming into the tournament as the main favourite, but it would take a brave man to back him at 3.50, which is the price that you can currently get at Bet365.
Instead, there might be some value in backing Olivier Rochus at 34.00 with the same bookmaker. Yes, that is right - I am willing to back a man that has no serve in a grass court tournament. So why would I actually want to take such a bet? Well, first of all, I like the Belgian for a number of reasons. He knows that he is not good enough to make it in the biggest events, so he usually plays his heart out in the smaller ones. And, believe it or not, he has already managed to record some extremely impressive results on all kinds of surfaces.
His relationship with Newport also seems to be quite good. He has been in the finals in both 2010 and 2011, so it seems that he likes the tournament a lot. Most importantly, his draw does not look that tough in all honesty. There are some strong players, including Kei Nishikori and Denis Istomin, in his part of the draw, but he won't have to play against the biggest favourites and that will help his cause. All in all, he should not be a 34.00 shot in my opinion - a small punt is in order here.
