Albany Stakes Betting Guide
Albany Stakes (Group 3) (6f)
The fourth day of the Royal meeting opens up with a Group 3 race for fillies over 6 furlongs. The Albany Stakes is one of the newest races and was added when the festival increased to five days back in 2002. It was originally a listed race and upgraded to Group 2 status in 2005.
The shorter version run on the Tuesday is the Queen Mary Stakes which carries far more weight in racing circles but there isn’t a lot in it in ability wise, and both races produce some nice horses that improve as the season goes on.
With the race being just eleven years old, we don’t really have any definite patterns as yet but interestingly, two different trainers have won the race twice each, and Mick Channon has won it three times! It's not surprising that Richard Hannon is amongst those who has more two year old winners than any other trainer, so obviously the ones he enters for a race such as this must be worth consideration.
In 2008 the Jim Bolger trained filly Cuis Ghaire became the first favourite and the first Irish trained winner of the race and those facts remain today. Six out the eleven winners were double figure prices and with the nature of the race attracting unexposed types is responsible for this.
More than half the winners were only having their second run after winning run of the mill maiden races and have probably shown more on the gallops at home than on the racecourse and it’s a tricky race to open up proceedings on day four.
